About:
Cane dancing (raks assaya) is a folkloric dance from the Said region of Egypt. The Saidi style of dance is fun, earthy, and joyful with exuberant jumping steps and big, juicy hip work.
Basima will teach workshop students cane technique and a choreography to a pop song by Hakim. In addition, she will discuss the cultural history of the dance including instruments, rhythm and costuming. This workshopp is appropriate for all levels of dancer. Bring your own cane; a limited number of canes will be availbale to borrow at the workshop. Handouts and music will be provided.
