You ladies were just radiant onstage at Tribal Fest 2008!!! I loved the costuming, the purple parasols, Arlette (mmmmm), the choreography, the sass, everything!!!! I was sooo moved.......it just reminded me of rehearsing 'Asian Magick" back in da day, but seeing your performance and how elegant it was.......well....y'know.......i came to the EMP booth balling like a idiot!!! I LOVE YOU LADIES!!!! You hold such a special place in my heart!

Saturday Workshops:
Taxeem: All That Oozes :: 12:30-2:30 pm
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, sensual vs sexual.

Layering and Isolation :: 3:30-5:30 pm
Ever feel as though your learning curve has reached a plateau? This intermediate /advanced workshop is a rousing motivational tool to enhance one’s own practice. Mira will begin with a thorough breakdown of basic isolations and will gradually increase into multiple layering designed to bewilder the brain and electrify the body. This workshop is an asset to any dancer.

Sunday Workshop:
The Art of the Shimmy :: 10:30 am-12:30 pm
An exhilarating and challenging workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, but to be indispensable to the intermediate and advanced student. This workshop, hailed for its blood pumping drills and mind-bending layering, will lead the students through a step by step approach to 4/4 shimmies, the freeze, and the techniques of layering shimmies and isolation.

Oasis Dance Studio Extravaganza....

This course will focus on exploring undulations that create snaky illusions and dreamy silhouettes. Dramatic snake arms, mayas, taxim, pelvic rolls and camels lend themselves beautifully to each individual dancer and their self expression. Celebrate the feminine divine through strength and flow with drills, layers and combos. All levels are welcome.

Wicked Harmony ~ 3 pm - 5 pm
Embrace the fluidity of dynamic level changes and thrill the senses. Tap into the outer limits of space and time while adding dimension to your dance. This course will celebrate the subtle and dramatic balance of different levels of being that enhance and compliment the body in motion. This symbiotic relationship will unfold through use of drills, layers and combos. All levels are welcome. If desired, bring knee pads for a short portion of floorwork.

Arabic Persussion and Rhythms Workshop
with Jeremiah Soto of Solace!

Join us for a special workshop day with Jeremiah Soto, the writer and producer of Solace. Jeremiah is one of the most popular American composers for bellydance in the world. He will take you through basic technique, then challenge you with rhythm drills. You'll build your skills, and suprise yourself with new growth!

Classical Arabic Technique :: 12:00 - 2:00 pm
Classical Arabic Style has very specific technique, and aims to create a more defined vocabulary of sounds from the dumbek. This is accomplished by learning specific hand positions and striking techniques. Students will utilize drills to develop left and right hand speed and precision, exercises to improve timing, and drum tricks. Class participants will receive a handout detailing Arabic rhythms and drills/exercises taught in class.

Rhythm Combinations :: 2:30 - 4:30 pm
Students will learn basic Arabic rhythms, then learn ways to combine them to create interesting compositions. Rhythms common for dancers will be the focus, and Jeremiah will show students how to layer rhythms and sounds for "full sound". This class culminates in a composition of the rhythms learned and students will walk away with a drum "song" to practice and play.

Oasis near the Oasis?

Please help a sister find a clean room to sleep in.

Looking forward to sleepovers for Mira, Frederique, Fat Chance, and Mardi this year.

I've got earplugs for noisy location and an eyemask for crappy curtains, but I really need a clean room.

Serious plus = coffeemaker, hot tub, WiFi, microwave, fridge, continental breakfast.

But most important = not sharing room with critters. Ew. Gross me out so much I cannot sleep at all.

The Super 8 Motel at 26667 Highland Ave got five stars in reviews on http://travel.yahoo.com

About Arlette:
After seeing her first bellydancer at the age of 12, Arlette was obsessed with bellydance! In the year 2000, bellydance became her life, taking many classes in both tribal and oriental styles of bellydance. She was a member of Burning Incense (2003 - 2007), a tribalret troupe from the High Desert (So. Cal) that competed and performed all over Southern California. Arlette earned her ANSUYA COMPREHENSIVE CERTIFICATION in 2007, and is currently the newest member of the esteemed BLUE DAMSEL DANCE COMPANY.

Arlette is also a salsa dancer with her partner Jesus Arellano. Although at first it was only for fun, they are currently teaching/directing a quinceanera choreography. Arlette is currently in school to become a Registered Dietician.

To Shoe or Not To Shoe....

That is the question! I've always wondered if wearing some kind of shoes, be it ballet slippers, china flats, herme's sandals, jazz shoe, etc., is part of the tribal costume? Do you wear them in class? Is it better to learn this dance barefooted?
Wearing shoes for outdoor events, restaurants, clubs, etc. for the beginner who may not be used to having something on their feet if they're used to being barefoot in class. It is a different feeling esp. in spins.

I personally can dance with or without shoes, I currently teach barefoot but my students have the choice right now whatever they want to wear or not wear, but I will be teaching at a Flamenco studio soon that has plywood floors, unvarnished (for now) and until I can get the flooring or carpeting, can shoes be an option to avoid the obvious splinters?

(I apologize as I will be reposting this on other tribes as well) Thank you my tribal sistahs!

For those of you who have spent anytime at Casa de Soto, you'll be sad to know that our beloved German Shepard, Uma, left this world this afternoon. Her sweet face and soul searching eyes will be terribly missed. Thanks to Lara who brought her to us around this same time a few years ago. She was a gift to us.

I've had a few emails so I thought I'd post here, too.

We will have some vending at the show and at the workshop sight, including the Oasis Dance Studio boutique featuring jewelry, dance clothing, showgirl accessories and more, Leela will have Hawaiian and bellydance goodies, Penny Star Jr. will have Burlesque paraphanelia including her amazing documentary on the Velvet Hammer, and Dea of Tribal Stuff will have general bellydance and ethnic gear.

There will be no food vendors, however, there are several restaurants and a Stater Bros grocery store with a deli in the vacinity of the Oasis Dance Studio. There are also many restaurants on Univeristy Ave on your way to the show venue, including an excellent Kabob restaruant (Inland Kabob) on the right side of the street just before you get to the campus.

Javanese Dance: Styles from the high courts of Jogyakarta and Surakarta with Danielle Meijer
10am - Noon

Javanese Court Dance, rarely seen in the west, epitomizes gentleness and quiet dignity. It is characterized by its meditative quality and delicate movements of the head and hands. In this workshop students will learn a version of the traditional dance Pushpuwarna (“Many kinds of flowers”) as well as specific dance moves that are suitable for fusion tribal bellydance.**

YAY! I start teaching at my own studio tomorrow eve! Check it out:

6:30-7:30pm :: Strong to the Core

This unique class begins with an energizing Pilates Mat based workout focusing on "core conditioning": the strengthening and stabilization of the abdominal, spine and pelvis. After our "mat-work", we will finish the class with isolated bellydance moves, from our head to our toes, to increase each dancers' strength, flexibilty, coordination and muscle tone. Please bring your own Yoga mat and Thera-Band (if you have them) as a limited supply will be available at The Oasis. This class can be used as a complete warm up for the Tribal Basics Class.

7:30-8:30pm :: Tribal Basics I

The beginning class will introduce students to body isolations, basic movements from the Fat Chance Belly Dance format, and dancing as a group. Finger cymbals will be introduced, and integrated into beginning movements. Beginning students will begin to develop their finger cymbal skills, and learn to lead and follow all basic movements, before moving to the Tribal Basics II.

Class Fees: $60/six weeks, $12 drop-in.

Mondays 10-11 am
This free form class will give you better isolations, an overview of bellydance styles, and a fun supportive atmosphere for working out or becoming a beautiful performer.

Focus is on proper technique and perfecting movements, including posture and hand/arm positioning, as well as cueing and following for advancement into performance prep.

Tribal Basics II with Rachel Lazarus Soto
Wednesdays at 6:30-7:30 pm
Building on Tribal Basics I, this class will add more steps from the Fat Chance Belly Dance format to your improvisational vocabulary, improve your isolations and movements, continue to develop your finger cymbals, and work towards more experience dancing in formation.

Damsel's Darlings with Rachel Lazarus Soto
"Hong Kong"
Wednesdays at 7:30-8:30 pm
This open call performance class will focus on poise, posture, and basic dance movements. We will improve your posture, flexibility, and teach you a fun choreography. This session will focus on an Asian-inspired choreography performed to Fabian's, "Hong Kong". We will perform this choreography Saturday March 1, at 8 pm, for the Super Saturdays Showcase at The Oasis, and at "Atomic Raq-it" March 2, between 1 and 4:30 pm, in Redlands, CA. Participants are required to purchase the costume at a fee of $35, due the second class of the session.

We have THREE NEW INSTRUCTORS starting in JANUARY 2008 at The Oasis Dance Studio!!!!

Monday eves - ME!
That's right, I will be teaching in my own studio - whaaaat?!?!?
6:30-7:30pm ~ Strong to the Core: a pilates mat class followed by strengthing isolation bellydance drills
7:30-8:30pm ~ Tribal Basics: a beginning ATS class based on the FCBD ATS format

Tuesday eves - EDENIA!
We just hired this gorgeous girl last night after our Holiday Party - YAY! :)
5:00-6:00pm ~ Tribal Fusion: with a strong focus on pops & locks

Thursday eves - JESUS & ARLETTE!
The cutest couple in the IE!!!
7:00-8:00pm ~ Salsa / Latin Dance: trust me, this class will be HOT!

Also added is "Damsel's Darlings" taught by the Oh-So-Sassy Rachel Lazarus Soto!
Wednesday eves 7:30-8:30pm ~ This is an Open Call performance class - a little showgirl and a LOT of style!

Our current fabulous classes will continue in 2008:
Tuesday eves:
6:30-7:30pm ~ Intermediate Tribal with Blue Damsel (instructor referral needed to attend this class)
7:30-9:00pm ~ Tribal Performance Prep with Blue Damsel (an EXAM is required to attend this class)
Wednesday eves:
6:30-7:30pm ~ Mixed Level Bellydance with Rachel Lazarus Soto
Thursday eves:
5:00-6:00pm ~ Intermediate / Performance Prep Bellydance with Basima
6:00-7:00pm ~ Bellydance Bootcamp with Basima
Saturday mornings:
10:30am-Noon ~ Beginning Bellydance with Zaheen
